DUNLOP: PROBLEM SOLVED

Dunlop appears to have solved its Daytona problems after successfully concluding a secret five-hour test at the Speedway just two days after the Rolex 24 hour Grand-Am race.

Concerns were raised when the DOT rears blistered and chunked after only four or five laps during the mid-January test on the freshly re-paved track.

The DOT tire problems hadn't shown up in December because only one banking was used. But when the Daytona SportBikes were sent out on the 3.51-mile, two-banking configuration that's used for the Daytona 200, the problems quickly cropped up.

"The biggest change is the pavement, because there is so much grip now and no wear now whatsoever," Dunlop's road race manager Sebastian Mincone began, "so you've got this heat generated from both bankings and that carries on all the time."

In less than two weeks Dunlop designed, built, and air freighted three new DOT-spec rears and two new DOT fronts. They also had two new rear slicks and two front slicks that were tested by two Dunlop test riders, Danny Roberts and Rich Coni-celli, and local racer Sean Dwyer.

"Out of the test we managed to find one front, one rear for the Dayto-na SportBike and two fronts and two rears for the Superbike that we're going to bring to the race in March," Mincone said after the test.
