Both Karpets and Kirchen are good all-rounders. They can climb well enough and they're good against the clock, so they can both legitimately aim for a place in the top 10. However, neither of them are going to win the Tour, so they have to pick their goals. Perhaps Kirchen will try for a good prologue and then target the Ardennes stage as a chance to take the yellow jersey. Having said that, it's over a year since Kirchen rode really well.
Funded by a consortium of Russian companies (not the Russian mafia, repeat, not the Russian mafia), Katusha is a 'global cycling project'—it's their response to RadioShack. Katusha has oil and gas sponsorship and takes its name from a rocket. RadioShack sells AM/FM radios. You decide who wins.
